LTLT Properties
Yellow Creek
In August 2008, LTLT purchased over 900 acres encompassing the lower end of Yellow Creek Valley in Graham County. This was the largest, remaining unprotected tract west of the Smokies in North Carolina and is located along the Cheoah River less than 3 miles from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and 5 miles from the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. The land includes over 12 miles of stream frontage, 4.5 miles of National Forest boundary and an extraordinary array of wetland, forestland, rivercane, and open field habitats.
Tessentee Bottomland Preserve
LTLT acquired this 64-acre tract of bottomland and river bluff land at the junction of Tessentee Creek and the Little Tennessee River in November of 1999. This conservation project was made possible by grants from the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund, The Lyndhurst Foundation and significant donations from LTLT supporters. The land lies at the center of the north-south oriented Little Tennessee valley, which runs from Rabun Gap, Georgia to the town of Franklin, NC.
Queen Branch Parcel
The Queen Branch parcel, which is a restoration site for mitigation purposes, was gifted to LTLT by Duke Power in June 2004. The property is 16 acres with 1,600 feet of Little Tennessee River frontage just upstream of the Lost Bridge Tract acquired by LTLT in September 2003. The floodplain parcel has open meadows and wetlands and a significant archeological site.
Gibson Bottoms
Gibson Bottoms was fated to be an RV park before hundreds of Macon County citizens asked the state to halt the first permit for point source pollution on the river downstream of Franklin.
Subsequently, LTLT negotiated a contract to purchase the 36-acre, over half-mile river frontage tract from the developer. The financial support for this purchase came from the NC Clean Water Management Trust Fund, a grant from Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, made via the Conservation Fund and private gifts from 85 friends of LTLT who responded to an appeal letter in 2002.
The Needmore Tract
The 4500-acre Needmore Tract was purchased by the State of North Carolina in January of 2004. The Tract encompasses 26 miles of Little Tennessee River frontage, 37 miles of tributary streams to the river and serves as the keystone to the forested corridor connecting the Nantahala and Cowee Mountain Ranges. The Little Tennessee River through the Needmore is home to half the native, freshwater fish species in North Carolina and the greatest diversity of freshwater mussels in the State.
